Do you think you'd enjoy providing beauty services for other people such as shampooing, colouring, cutting and styling hair? If so, then you would most likely thrive in a career as a hairdresser. But before you become a hairdresser, you need to become an apprentice hairdresser first. As an apprentice hairdresser, you will be working under the supervision of hairdressers and aid them in performing their tasks. Entry requirements for apprentice hairdresser positions vary from one employer to another, but most require applicants to undergo training. Becoming an apprentice hairdresser will provide you with the training and experience you need to become a professional hairdresser. You can also get off-the-job training from registered training organisations such as Technical and Further Education (TAFE).
When you begin as an apprentice hairdresser, you will first have to do routine tasks such as assisting senior hairdressers with preparing the client, shampooing and applying and removing simple hairdressing treatments. You will also be tasked with cleaning, maintaining and sterilising equipment. Keeping the salon clean may also be among your tasks as an apprentice hairdresser. When you gain more experience, you can then carry out more complicated tasks under supervision. These tasks include cutting and styling hair. You may also be asked to perform simple hair treatments. Shaving and trimming beards and mustaches are among the tasks you have to do as an apprentice hairdresser.
When you become an apprentice hairdresser, it's important that you have no skin allergies as you deal with different hair treatment products that contain chemicals. You should also have a pleasant personality as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills, especially when dealing with different kinds of people as an apprentice hairdresser. Good hand-eye coordination and the ability to work under pressure is a must if you want to succeed as an apprentice hairdresser. These jobs require you to be patient and know how to follow instructions accurately.
Many employment opportunities are available for those seeking apprentice hairdresser jobs. Majority of these job openings are in hairdressing salons. You can also choose to apply as an apprentice hairdresser in large department stores. Knowing how to sell products is also an advantage if you want to become an apprentice hairdresser. When you finish your apprenticeship, you might want to apply as a hairdresser for TV, theatre, film or advertising agencies.
